Something the article touched on but which might bear amplifying is that many companies have been able to generate increased cash flow by reducing operating capital. Funds that are no longer tied up in inventory or accounts receivable are sitting on the balance sheet, availble to finance expansion, increase dividends, pay special dividends, repurchase stock, or attract the attention of activist investors.

With stronger balance sheets and reduced expenses, these companies should be able to perfrom very well, resulting in multiple expansion.
