Thanks for the comments, all. I think the argument that any arrangement would increase economies of scale or otherwise get GM better prices is ridiculous -- they've already pressured their suppliers to the extent that Delphi is nearly dead and the others certainly aren't looking too promising, and, lest we forget, GM is still the largest car company in the world. If they can't get good enough prices or deals, or develop cars efficiently across platforms, what on earth makes anyone think that they would begin to do so if only they could add another badge to their mix.

And on the French issue, I was being a bit facetious and recognize your point -- but still, does anyone really think that Renault will cure GM's ills when Saab and Opel have clearly not?
