So now that SCOTUS has declared Obamacare to be a regressive tax, does this mean Krugman will come out against it?

Picked up Jan 13 VXX calls this am to hold for a while. Hours later I'm tempted to take my winnings and run...I'm not normally this lucky.

Have a new book out on biofuels science and policy: http://bit.ly/Hg6eUs. Important read for investors in GEVO, KIOR, REGI, AMRS, SZYM, etc.

After hearing Kass's call for the S&P to top 1500 in '12, I've figured the great mystery out...Kass is GOLLIATH.

VIX is almost back to its July lows. Sign of EU problems dissipating, or just volatility weariness? Good time to hedge w/ puts, either way.
12/21/11
Volatility is the norm rather than the exception I guess.

TVIX is under 35? That is very, very tempting.
12/20/11
Yeah, tempting for me to shoot myself for buying it at 38
12/19/11
Tristan R. Brown
Back in TVIX at 37.7. Let's see how much steam this play has left in it.
Not much I'm waiting for 30-35
12/16/11
Tristan R. Brown
I really need to start buying TVIX first thing in the morning and selling it during lunch.
12/16/11
Remind to self : morning of the biggest IPO of the year, buy volatility.
12/15/11
Tristan R. Brown
Tempted to head back to the TVIX well now that it's back under 40.
12/15/11
Yesterday we closed about 1211 and TVIX about 42.
12/15/11
10/9 = 10/19 above.
12/14/11
Tristan R. Brown
Looks like I should've been greedier with TVIX. Oops.
12/14/11
Me to, but did good so can't complain.
12/14/11
Still holding from 41.5.
12/14/11
Tristan R. Brown
Out of TVIX @ 43 (in yesterday morning), 7% gain. Not bad for my first time trading it.
12/14/11
Tristan, congrats. My first 5 trades of TVIX put me up 150%. Now I'm holding the bag at $88 per share :(
12/14/11
johnny: no worry, you have a lot of ppl on the same boat with you. i'm holding @48
12/13/11
Tristan R. Brown
What's the longest you've held TVIX for? Everyone always says not to hold it "long term" but no context provided. 1 day? 1 week? 1 month?
2x & 3x Leveraged Items usually reset daily, so returns can drift if held more than a day. Good for a trend but it can change fast
12/13/11
Yeah, leveraged ETFs can't take a punch. Not a good idea to hold overnight if you anticipate any potential ACHI news (downgrades, etc).
12/13/11
Tristan R. Brown
Woot TVIX!
i could only afford 27 shares at 40.06... *sigh. still better than being made to feel crazy another day in a row
12/13/11
Tristan R. Brown
I promised myself I'd finally buy some TVIX at 40 so...here goes nothing.
Today, you are my enemy.

Not sure where all of the bullishness is coming from, the news from The Economist is that the EU is just treating the symptoms.
12/9/11
Most people are not bullish... the futures have come down a bit... and we have more Euro drama for the forseeable future.
12/9/11
Also, I'm know in the camp that an event worse than Lehman is coming. Without the ECB stepping in substantially Euro banks are F*

Interesting fact for day: last example of coordinated rate cuts caused SPY to jump 3%. Date: October 8, 2008.
11/30/11
thats why i view it as a bad sign of the health of the economy
11/30/11
Tristan R. Brown
Selling last of my longs (XOM, EXC) today. Correct me if wrong, but last coordinated central bank move was Oct 8, 2008. Scary precedent.
11/30/11
very interesting. I will have to investigate.
At least according to a calender-based Google search: http://bit.ly/rZNVBn. Same search for more recent periods turned up zilch.

Debating trading my index puts for calls if and when we hit SPY 111 again.
Sounds good.

Today I'm thankful for EWG puts.

Typical Friday afternoon on ST...depending on who you ask, we're either shooting up big or repeating early October '08 next week :)
11/18/11
Key difference this time around is the S&P is still below 1220 for now.

So up again? This market's a covered call writer's dream. Lots of volatility for high premiums, but little monthly changes in prices.
Another drop's fine with me too, I can buy the calls back for a fraction of the sale amount.
11/18/11
Excellent strategy.

Dip buyers are getting slaughtered.
How often does that happen? An outright GUARANTEE that if your trade goes wrong one day, you'll recover in a couple more?
im with man, i think both sides are ridiculous. on reason to overreact over a day or 2.
11/9/11
Tristan R. Brown
Wow, EWG and EWI. Euro markets are in a lot of pain right now.

I hate being cash-heavy...with the sole exception of mornings such as this one.

What's the cut-off time for early exercise on options for most brokerages? Close of trading day (4 EST) or later?
10/31/11
gotta be 4:30 as CA closes 30 minutes later. Depends on account an base !
Great, thanks bob.

Now 75% cash. Will stay until mid-Nov, then SPY puts if super-committee still working. Betting against Congress worked well in late July!

WOOPS

Selling my longs (PG GE ABT XOM UBS PAYX) after GDP release for avg 15% gain. I'll take that for YTD, let alone 30 days. Keeping EXC collar.
I'll let other people's money determine how much steam this rally has left in it.
10/27/11
good job. Selling on good news an buying bad works 100% beter then chasing an being down a week later ! good job TRB . My sales are in too
10/21/11
Tristan R. Brown
Mr. Market, I mean this in the nicest way possible...but you've gone bonkers. Meanwhile, I'm watching my longs go nowhere because of hedges.
10/19/11

Hard time keeping a bearish outlook when empty EU rumors and bank accounting tricks send the market soaring.
10/19/11
im really only bullish on a few strong companies none are banks lol, energy and technology
10/19/11
Once this earnings (or lack thereof) frenzy blows over and eurozone fails to shock and awe this weekend, I would expect a decent retracement
10/17/11
Tristan R. Brown
And here's the end-of-the-day pop, right on schedule...
That was a rather pitiful pop, wasn't it?
Interesting that the rally attempt at 2:50 failed today, despite having worked repeatedly lately.
10/14/11
Tristan R. Brown
Ok, the bulls have finally convinced me. I'll be looking into SPY calls on Monday to make up for all of the longs I sold this morning.
10/14/11
They, like me, are just taking this day to day. It's earning season, mareket goes up. We're 1 our of 4 weeks in. Selling to begin shortly.
10/14/11
Any of you guys Loosely follow Elliot wave theory?
10/13/11
Tristan R. Brown
SPY 118 calls sold, SPY 111 puts bought. Market's getting way too predictable.
10/13/11
Wow, you're a bit bearish (and by a bit I don't mean a bit) there...what's the expiration curiously?
Jan. I've been making this trade since August and its paid off every time. Until we close above or below this range, I'll keep at it.
