True north seeks to dig deeper and analyse trade ideas fundamentally and then execute or build a position in the best possible technical way. TN has been in the financial industy for a few years and has extensive knowledge in macro economic trading. The approach TN uses to explore trade opportunities is: 1. Identify and build the trade's/investment's fundamental thesis 2. Work on trading details (time horizon, size, entry/exit) 3. Always document your thoughts before putting the investment on. 4. Always analyse risks to your investment thesis and be honest about them to yourself and your investors. 5. Be honest and willing to accept mistakes and never repeat them. For a blunder is nothing but a mistake comitted twice.
I am a MD in the Netherlands and selftaught investor. After 20 years :-) I am getting the hang of it and found that investing is simpeler than I thought although it requires strict discipline.
To be succesful:
1. accept and cut your losses when they are small. ALWAYS
2. time the market according to it's character; in a strongly trending general market follow the trend weeks to months but in choppy markets take your profits in days or weeks
3. trade what you see, not what you think, or worse what you feel! Or still worse what others say.
4. combine fundamental and technical analysis, price action is the truth
5. manage your money and learn the formulas for bet size, profitability and win/loss ratios.
6. record all your trades and learn from them, it will help you stay disciplined
My life changed on 14 Nov 2007. I underwent a quadruple bypass. "Teamwork" is invisible to me. I'm not a cooperative or flexible person. Thus, I was unprepared for the pain after surgery, the requirement that I do things that made the pain worse, etc. I spent 3 weeks in the ICU and seven weeks in the hospital. If my wife had not so fully devoted herself to me, and if she had not, so much, wanted me to live, I would have died. As it was, I lived and had numerous complications.
When I finally came home, I could not get up, nor sit down, nor walk, etc. I spent a lot of time in front of the TV. Before 14.11.07, TV had not been one of my favorite things. The most interesting programs were the news, and stock market channels. While I had owned stocks for almost 50 years, I hadn't been interested enough to follow them.
Before, I was mentally tired when I was physically tired. After, I became physically tired long before being mentally tired. So the stock market became a therapy, a form of mental exercise.
P.S: My Seeking Alpha pseudonym used to be "socphd71." For sins against the website which I don't yet understand, I was banned from that pseudonym and acquired this one.
