  • 1894 Rare Interview Of Nikola Tesla: Is TSLA His Reincarnation?

After reading a Instablog post by John Peterson where he quotes Thomas Edison from a New York Herald article on Edison's opinion on batteries, I started researching Tesla articles. Here are some edited (some words were illegible so we guessed) excerpts from the

The Wichita daily eagle. (Wichita, Kan.) 1890-1906, October 23, 1894, Image 6

It makes no difference to a man's health how long he works so long as he loves his work, for his affection is like the oil in the lamp which keeps the wick burning without consuming the wick itself. When the oil is gone, then it is that the wick goes fast. If at any moment I lost my eagerness and enthusiasm, then very likely I would go to pieces.

"That was what would have happened to me if I had continued to be a journalist. You never knew that I was once a member of your profession? Well, I was. The trouble with me was that I wrote too carefully, and, as it seems to me, too thoughtfully. When I wrote an article of which I was particularly proud, my friends would say: 'Tesla, that was a masterpiece!'

But the editor would say: 'Why don't you write something more lively? Not a half a dozen people will read that stuff.' No. journalism is the hardest work in the world for the man who wishes to be thoughtful. My heart was not in it, and it would have worn me out soon, like the wick without any oil. Even as it is now I get worn out sometimes, but it is a great comfort to be one's own master and to feel that there is nothing to prevent one's dropping all work at any moment and starting for Europe or somewhere else, for as long a rest as one wants.

"I have noticed a queer thing about my mental operation, and that is that mind to work in two halves, that when I talk, or even when I sleep, only one half of my mind appears to be thus engaged, the other half goes on steadily with whatever I have on my mind, or maybe I ought to say with whatever it has on its mind. My friends say: 'You will kill yourself.' I say Nonsense.' I used to be an athlete once and I recuperate very quickly. See me now." He held up his hands as if the' were trustworthy indicators of his physical condition. They were long and thin and nervous. They trembled a little and the conclusion naturally to be drawn from them was that their possessor was a man whose tremendous energy, although under good control, was likely to use him up if run at such high pressure much longer. Mr. Tesla is only thirty-seven years old. and he looks even younger........ He is very confident that great things are coming soon through the utilization of the electrostatic or magnetic condition of the earth itself. "Some time," he says, "electricity will be taken from all about us and used for light, heat and motive power. We will reach down to the earth and tap the current anywhere, getting all we want without expense. It is interesting to sit down somewhere away from all interruption and think out what that would mean. It seems hardly possible that these wonders can be far away, because the process by which they can be realized is so simple. Expressed roughly, all that would have to be done would be to set the earth's electricity to vibrating, and adjust a machine to these vibrations wherever the force was recognized. It is something as if the earth were a rubber bag. Shake it in one place and you get vibrations another place. You and I could not feel the electrical vibrations, but I have in mind a machine that will If nothing ? . I have the reasons for predicting that messages will be transmitted through the earth in this way without wires through a human being: it seems surprising that this has not been done before. "It is reasonable to suppose that the earth's electricity is generated by the atoms of which all things arc composed. We and our world are not only whirling through space with terrific speed, but every little atom in the conditions suitable to its generation."While electricity could hardly be called the ether itself, it is probable that the effects of dynamic, electricity and electro-magnetism are the basis of ether in motion, and the basis of electricity effects of ether 'under a strain'. The discovery of a method of utilizing this practically ex-haustless force that could unlock some of the greatest secrets of the universe.

  • Must Haves, Habits And Addictions: House Of Cards Meet BlackBerry

I have not written an article since the most recent on piñata stock (CRM) on December 3rd. I must admit, I am more bearish on CRM after fielding the scant but telling comments on the article. I also must admit, I caught an addiction shortly thereafter which has been abruptly put on hold by the provider of the narcotic-like product: Netflix (NFLX). I just finished episode 13 and must say that not being able to go on to the next episode in 20 seconds is perhaps the most difficult thing since quitting cigarettes. Besides being bullish on NFLX because they not only know how to create content that is a very likely a by-product of their meta-data, it shows that the US is very much a country akin to addiction, kicking addiction and the home of the second chance. NFLX is a must have.

Wall Streets new current media mania is the jockeying by the cable companies, most recently with Time Warner Cable (TWC), consolidating and preparing for the 'cutting of the cord' by subscribers. I think this has been stoked by NFLX getting into the content business so successfully and more importantly to the chagrin of the cable companies. We have written about this in the past as it relates to Charlie Ergen's DISH (DISH) and NFLX before and think Charlie is more than candid about whats going on the happenings in his industry. If the popularity of House Of Cards doesn't send a shiver down the spine any cable executive's spine, then they are lying. Meantime, Charlie's gambit on broadband wireless and its related focus on cord cutters also seems to be working as we have also opined before here at SA.

We also have had an opinion on BlackBerry which has certainly had its ups and downs this year. Fellow SA contributor Quoth The Raven has a written a nice piece on BlackBerry (BBRY) which was themed on President's unwavering use of the BBRY device for security's sake. The use of the BBRY device by the House Of Cards star, Senator Francis Underwood, played by actor Kevin Spacey, is captured by our screen shot below: (click to enlarge)The undertone of this product placement in the popular series makes clear that the BBRY device is used by a powerful breed of key opinion and policy makers. This image is something which will not easily wash away. Moreover, new BBRY CEO John Chen is certainly driving home the message that security is of utmost importance. Also, it is also clear that the recent $1 billion cash raise in the form of a convertible debt offering led by Fairfax in Canada was not to pay current bills, but remove any doubt of a coming cash crises. Yes, BBRY has lost a lot of users. But not all of its users. And the BBM cross platform messenger is alive and kicking. I and others here at SA are fans of the BBM potential. There are many add-ons, new features and services that BBM's 80 million users can be offered in the future that can bring revenues to BBRY. BBRY continues to unwind its inventory of Z10's in creative ways such as this email offer pictured below:(click to enlarge)There is an old saying that keeps coming to mind especially as it relates to BlackBerry's old nickname "CrackBerry": 'old habits die hard'. In our opinion, the naysayer's calling for BlackBerry's death should watch an episode of NFLX's House Of Cards and rethink their prediction. With BBRY shares in the mid $5 range, it's priced more like an option than an outright share. At this price, BBRY may be the perfect 'stocking stuffer' for a youngster with a long time horizon. Here is BBRY's newly released short interest showing its highest level since June:

In fact, investors may want to take physical possession to limit supply for overzealous short sellers in this name.

Disclosure: I am long BBRY. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it. I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article.

Additional disclosure: I have been long NFLX,DISH and want to be short CRM and may enter and reneter these positions shortly.

  • Tesla: Here Is What Really Happened

Tesla Motors (TSLA) rallied yesterday.(click to enlarge)Much attention was given to the German clearance of the Tesla fire turmoil. Here is an excerpt from Streetinsider:

"In investigating these incidents, the KBA reviewed Tesla's responses to their inquiries, as well as other information. They subsequently issued the following statement:

According to the documents, no manufacturer-related defects [herstellerseitiger Mangel] could be found. Therefore, no further measures under the German Product Safety Act [Produktsicherheitsgesetz (ProdSG)] are deemed necessary. " Actually, we think the accident which killed Paul Walker, 40, on Saturday afternoon is what reminded investors that petrol based "ice" cars are capable of catching fire as well. Here is an excerpt from NYDAILYNEWS:

Actor Paul Walker - a self-styled adrenaline junkie best known for his role in "The Fast and the Furious" movies - was killed Saturday in a fiery single-car wreck in Southern California.

The 40-year-old Walker was riding in a red Porsche GT about 3:30 p.m. when the sports car flew off the road and slammed into a tree in Santa Clarita, authorities and witnesses said. The car burst into flames.
