Retired physician. I have been giving myself a crash course in personal investing because I am tired of paying 1% (which at best is 20% of my profits) to people who look at my accounts once a quarter. I am also fed up with what, for want of a better name, I would call "dart board diversification" just because that is the thing to do. My wife's state pension, accumulated TIAA annuities at their oldest rates, and eventually full social security for both of us provides some degree of income stability independent of the stock market. My goal for all the rest of our investments is a 5% pre-tax return which should allow us to live off income without invading principal, except in the most dire of emergencies. I ...More
