  • Best Buy's Balance Sheet: How Do You Calculate The Hidden Losses That Investors Can't See? [View article]
    Hi Seeking Beta,

Interesting article and premise and as a fellow contributor, I appreciate the different perspective you take with this piece. At the same time, the article does not quantify your premise, nor does it include any financial information to give me any idea about the human capital impact that should show how operations are being affected over time, and in the future. In addition, with respect to the balance sheet and the hidden impact, at the very least, a presentation of the current quarters balance sheet, with an analysis of its cash to debt position, interest obligations, lease commitments, and cash flow relative to those items would go a long way in helping legitimize your thesis. As a best buy investor, who owns it for clients, you bring attention to valid points about their human capital weaknesses, and I appreciate it. Your own analysis about the comprehensiveness of the article might reveal areas to improve as well. Thank you for the article and my comment was meant to be constructive, and not offensive.

  • John Paulson: Lucky Or Great? [View article]

Hi all- Paulson has a long track record of outperforming the market and almost any index associated with it. If you do some homework, he is a guy any investor can learn from, if you are willing to take the time to find out about him.

  • Alan Abelson Died: Lives On Through A Generation He Defined [View article]
    Hi James,

I just wanted to write and say your column about Alan Abelson made me very nostalgic. It accurately summarizes what some of us who became addicted to finance experienced during the course of their relationship with Mr. Abelson. He was the best writer I ever read, in any subject matter. Apparently, he had similar qualities as a professional and human. Thank you for your personal anecdote about Jim Rogers, and best of luck with continued success in the investment profession.

  • Steady Goes The Big Ship - An Update On The Progress Of Transforming BP [View article]
    Hi Jacktheharp,

Thank you for reading the article and the nice post. I appreciate your opinion regarding the improvement at BP, especially as you were in the oil industry. I saw a story on the internet the other day where the energy industry was the most hated in the country. I find that interesting and certainly misguided, as without energy the country loses the ability to have access to travel by air, car, ship, etc, along with transporting goods etc. Also, as you know, oil is the raw material for many items besides those in energy, like pharmaceutical products, etc. So, like it or not, big oil and energy is a critical component of the country and should not be demonized. One can argue about the appropriateness of tax breaks for billion dollar companies, but one could apply that to any industry, not just oil or energy. Regarding BP's exploration projects in the Gulf, I also know BP has more capital committed to investment in the US than any company over the next 10 years. With respect to writers opinions and columns, and one can include any media form (internet, blogs, tv, etc), so many opinions are agenda or ulterior motivated. One of the great things about investing is eventually, if your analysis and reasoning are correct, most of the time, you will benefit. Again, thank you for reading the article, your comment, good luck with your investments, and I hope you are enjoying your retirement.

  • Steady Goes The Big Ship - An Update On The Progress Of Transforming BP [View article]
    Hi Inspector,

Thank you for following up and providing a link to the article. The article does not include any information on BP's production volumes in total, or segmented. In addition, it does not mention why production volumes increased or decreased in the previous quarter, or what could happen in the upcoming quarter. Just looking at the bottom line does not give one an accurate understanding of why the numbers took place. I did not delve into the price of oil or the issues in Russia which affected the volumes for the quarter, but they contribute to more of an understanding of how you get the numbers. Each writer provides their own analysis and figures, and to each his own as to how one goes about their work. Again, thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate them. Good luck with your investments, and with BP.

  • Ancestry.com (ACOM) +15.8% AH after Bloomberg reports the company is weighing a sale, and has enlisted the help of famous tech banker Frank Quattrone to find buyers. A source expresses confidence P-E firms will show interest in Ancestry, whose valuation has fallen to historically low levels on concerns about slowing subscriber growth, though analyst Susan Etlinger thinks Google or Facebook might also consider a bid.  [View news story]

    Hi Meredin Capital,

I addressed these concerns in the article. Natural gas is not a long term substitution for oil in China or India, and the 2$ gas price has yet to be seen as holding for any kind of a long term time frame. Also, BP has plenty of exposure to the natural gas industry.

    Hi Bradmeister,

Okada was on the Wynn board from the very start of the company. Time will tell about where Wynn winds up relative to the competition. Good luck in the market.
