  • General Electric's Expected Bid For Alstom Is Smart And Should Happen [View article]
Siemens' stepping forward is an industry acknowledgment of the value to be had. I hope a bidding war doesn't remove that value. Good luck to Alstom holders on that front.

It is expected by many that the rail portions will be the divested part, but that does not mean GE wouldn't want the TGV making unit. The rail part would actually fit well into GE's transportation division, which does quite a bit of locomotive business.

I also believe the nuclear unit shall be a crucial issue to regulators, and especially to France, which has 59 nuclear reactors that are managed by an agency that is 85% government owned.

I believe such a maneuver would shock some serious action, but I really don't know what that would be.

That is one interesting idea. We do know that there is a spinoff in the works for the capital unit. Perhaps there are more to come, with GE some of much of the entity finding a new home abroad.

GE is no stranger to working in France. GE already has more employees within French than Alstom does.

  • Wait For The Next Shoe To Drop Before Buying Intuitive Surgical [View article]
The earnings report that just came out may be that next shoe, but I really still question sales in the first half of 2014. The report may just be the stinky sock that was under the last shoe.

Yikes...earlier this month, someone paid $541 per share. That is a harsh fortnight.

  • USG Continues To Look Like An Eventual Berkshire Hathaway Acquisition Target [View article]
I didn't see any media coverage of the filing, butlast week Berkshire filed the increased position I had noted here: http://1.usa.gov/1gZ3qfX

Next month, when 13Fs come out, this may be news.

Many of these equities have performed below average so far in April, and especially WY. which really spiked lower recently. It was also recently noted that a large put purchase was apparently made that would only be profitable if WY is below 28 in mid May. The puts cost over $330,000, and so this appears to be a position by either a sizable shareholder or one who has some good reason to anticipate WY below 28. WY reports earnings next Friday. I believe any further weakness that comes would be a buying opportunity, but I would also suggest that would-be investors consider refraining from entering a position, or adding to one, here and now due to this uncertainty.

by adding the stupid, are you referring to yourself or the reader? It certainly doesn't keep it simple, because the stupid is non-essential...simply superfluous. Still, this is a great article.

  • Apple Looks Like A Better Buy Than The Market [View article]
They already are. Many new medical apps are designed for the iOS and many new devices are being built to utilize iOS devices and not android. This will be an increasingly important customer base and use because medical devices can maintain high margins. Many other businesses that people expect Apple to attract will be lower margin than Apple's current business

Yes I do mention "Though the preferred may not perform as well as the common, the immediate income is significant over the next two years, while still providing exposure to the potential success of the ongoing turnaround." The conversion rate is uncertain and the price for the heightened immediate income is reduced long-term exposure. CLF does have far more potential.

The conversion rate will be between 0.7037 and 0.8621 of a common share depending upon the price of shares. The info is on page s-8 of the prospectus: http://1.usa.gov/15Jqoml
