Einhorn's Greenlight Wins Injunction Against Apple, Making A March Dividend Increase More Probable [View article]
I agree, James, the bundling they did sounds like something congress would do, where they might create some bill for orphans with leukemia that also includes a subsidy for ethanol producers and a pay raise for congress.
As for a dividend increase, I do not think it is a cave in so long as they do not issue the preferred.
Apple's Margins Are The Key To This Quarter And Beyond [View article]
There is certainly a point there. Apple's margins may contract significantly, but only as the company grows its market share and as that market grows itself. The company will also likely expand into new markets. Nonetheless, the company will benefit from maintaining high margins as long as it can. How long it can maintain them is a mystery, and all we can do right now is examine the trend at which they decline to extrapolate where they may go in the future.

Google's margins peaked at about 30 percent, which was already understood as too high...Apple's are yet to decline to 30%. Further, Google is less dependent upon hardware than is Apple, and hardware is generally a lower margin business than is the soft side.

This may be true, but this CFO was not there for 5 years. Maestri joined XRX in 2011. The company subsequently began buying back shares, and already bought about $1 billion. They also announced they will buy more in 2013 and that the dividend is going up this quarter. Maestri was active.

A Cheaper iPhone Would Confirm A Lack Of Innovation And Declining Margins At Apple [View article]
Apple is seeing some serious competition. That is why its global market share for smartphones declined in the second half of 2012, while Samsung's increased. A coming onslaught of cheaper smartphones will further fraction the market and lower prices, hitting Apple's bottom line. Will apple survive? Yes. Will they be able to maintain 40% margins? Highly unlikely.
A Cheaper iPhone Would Confirm A Lack Of Innovation And Declining Margins At Apple [View article]
hey, don't get me wrong, I do love Apple products. I have an Apple TV, an iPhone and a MacBook Air. I also have been an apple user since the Apple IIc, back in the mid-80s. And I wanted to buy new a MacBook Air this year, but they came out with a 'new' one that was essentially the same old one. I took a video file to the Apple store to see if it could be modified faster on the new model and the speed was about the same. I was expecting a retina display, but that was also inexplicably absent. The same held true for the ipad mini. Now, Apple has almost nowhere to go but into the cheap seats. That is not the Apple way. Apple became the powerhouse it is by consistently making products people wanted at any price. Now, they are competing with the generics on the bottom shelf.

Damages from losing a lawsuit can also be a rounding error. They are selling billions in devices per quarter, and the last lawsuit resulted in damages of just over $1 billion. That, too, can be seen as part of the cost of doing business.

I am no Apple hater. I have an iPhone, an iPad and a MacBook. Moreover, I have had numerous macs in my lifetime and even had an Apple IIc when I was a child, an Apple model that ran basic and which pre-dates Macintosh altogether. I am no apple Hater.
But tell me this, was it a good idea to hire John Browett, or was it a good idea to fire him. If he was a bad choice for the position, then Apple's hiring him indicates Apple was recently making poor management choices. If he was a good hire, then firing him indicates they are making rash decisions. So which one is it? They cannot both be examples of good judgment, can they?

I also use pandora, and do so mostly through my iPhone while commuting. If the phone had a more integrated way of delivering that service, including better buffering songs into the device for continuous play through signal loss, I may switch to it due to that integration. Quite frankly, they could also power it by Pandora or an already existing Pandora competitor.

I do use pandora on my iPhone and the ads are very repetitive. I regularly get this one for a role playing game, where the commercial starts buy stating "Fortify your walls." The commercial is so frequently played that it seems to me it must account for a very large portion of Pandora's ads. Does anyone else know this ad? Maybe they concentrated the whole ad campaign through my iPhone.
