Cisco (CSCO) considers Huawei Technologies a tough competitor, as do many other networking giants (I, II), and an in-depth Globe and Mail piece helps explain why. • In China they call it "R&D".

When said "R&D" takes place in China, it's what we in the West refer to as "Theft", "Corporate & Cyber Espionage", "Copyright, Patent and Trademark Infringement".

  • Well we can say what we'd like about IP theft - and its rampant in China and Russia and most emerging markets.

But let also point out that Chinese firms are preparing for the long haul.... American multi-nationals fire 10% of R&D to meet next quarters .27 earnings. Meanwhile Chinese firms build for the future!

And we wonder where the jobs are at?
