Warren Buffett seems to be ignoring his own advice in his purchase of the Omaha World-Herald. In 2009, he called the future of newspapers "terrible," and said he wouldn't buy most of them "at any price." He may want to keep his hometown paper locally owned and preserve its editorial independence, but is that in the best interests of Berkshire (BRK.A) shareholders?

  • Buffet is getting old... Who cares if he gets a little nostalgic, and buys his local newspaper. He deserves it.

  • Corruptocrat Buffett may know something that we do not know. Maybe Obama will bailout these newspapers. Kind of when Buffett advised Geitner on the economy and bought bank stocks before their run up. Cronyism and corruption lead to the best investment returns. Buffett is a fat cat crony known to front run the competition. Crime does pay. Just ask John Corzine

  • This seems like an acquisition that might have been better made with Buffet's personal wealth rather than the Berkshire's capital, if the thought process is more around local ownership and editorial independence.

  • Until gov't funding for newspapers to 'go green' (apps, website upgrades, anything to save the trees, etc.) comes in and these "terrible" newspaper companies are brought back from the dead. Something tells me Berkshire folks will enjoy watching how this one plays out. I wouldnt underestimate the old man.

  • The Omaha World Herald has always given Berkshire good press. Why wouldn't they? It's what shareholders read and keep as memorabilia from their pilgrimage to Omaha.

Buffett likely purchased the paper at a discount because he saw value. "Nothing to add."
