In what could be a groundbreaking move, Apple (AAPL) is said to be weighing a "multi-billion dollar bid" for exclusive distribution rights for the English Premier League from 2013-2016. Such a move would give Apple a valuable content asset to push to both its mobile devices and any future TV sets it releases. Apple has reportedly been stymied in its efforts to secure a la carte distribution deals with studios for top programs.

  • Agree with Joe Dir that it will not be a wise move for Apple. This is just a rumor, Apple is not stupid to commit its capital to such a deal.

  • I'm curious, why do you all think it would be stupid?

They'd have the hardware to sell - computers, mobile and alleged apple tv -, and the distribution infrastructure both for delivery and charging via itunes.

I think it'd be terrible for choice, but good for Apple. Why do you think it would be bad for them? What am I missing?

  • It would take living outside the U.S. to understand the importance of this kind of deal. In America it is difficult comprehend how many people devote their lives to soccer. Imagine combing the popularity of the NFL, NBA, and MLB and you get the EPL.

There may be other things AAPL can do with their cash pile that would make shareholders happy, but this would be a monumental deal. If it goes through of course...

  • They buy what they can get. Buy content from HBO, CNN, Showtime, etc--then I'll be impressed.
