China Unicom (CHU), the only Chinese carrier authorized to sell the iPhone (for now, anyway), has begun selling prepaid Android phones at a price of just $158. Moreover, Digitimes' sources claim rivals CHL and CHA are likely to follow suit. The arrival of cheaper Android phones could prove a headache for local chipmaker Spreadtrum (SPRD), which has a weak position in the smartphone processor market. (previously)

  • This is the best news for SPRD since they provide the lowest cost platform for 3G and 2.5G Android Phones. Especially for China Mobile, SPRD's 1GHz TD-SCDMA 3G Android phone is under $100. That's the biggest volume driver.
