A seven-story plant with just 312 non-union employees in the Ohio town of Leipsic is "probably the best, shining example of the direction" of U.S. Steel (NYSE:X), says CEO John Surma. The facility makes high-margin, custom-designed products with low-cost, highly automated equipment. A major customer is the automotive industry, which is prepared to pay the premium for the more refined steel. The facility contrasts with other, more expensive and unionized U.S. Steel facilities that employ thousands, yield tiny margins and struggle to compete.
