Fires cripple Motiva refinery in latest headache for Shell, Saudi Aramco
- The biggest U.S. oil refinery is largely out of service after fires over the last two weeks damaged equipment at the Motiva plant in Port Arthur, Tex.; Motiva's 325K bbl/day crude distillation unit and various other units are believed to be offline.
- The 600K bbl/day plant has become an economic headache analysts have said is costing owners Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A, RDS.B) and Saudi Aramco hundreds of millions of dollars in repairs and lost fuel sales.
- Earlier reports indicated Motiva's crude distillation unit may face a three-month shutdown next year to replace a vibrating pipe.
