- Google (GOOG -1%) has been developing a smartwatch of its own, GigaOm reports. The technology blog claims that Google (not Apple, as had been previously speculated) acquired wearable displays start-up WIMM Labs last year.
- WIMM released its WIMM One smartwatch in 2011 back when it wasn't called a smartwatch. The product ran on the Android OS. Sales were pulled after the company entered into an "exclusive, confidential relationship for our technology" upon its acquisition. WIMM now resides in Google's Android division.
- WIMM had also released its own environment to let third-party developers build "micro apps" that work independently from a smartphone. Some are still listed on its beta app store.

Financial Times reported back in March that, according to a source, Google was developing a smartwatch. And The WSJ wrote that Microsoft had smartwatch plans of its own in April.
