BlackBerry finally launches BBM Android/iOS apps
- A post on BlackBerry's (BBRY -1.1%) corporate blog: "In the next few hours, people will start seeing BBM in Google Play, the App Store and in select Samsung App Stores – where it will be free to download." The company adds ~6M people have signed up for info this year ahead of the app launches.
- The launches were originally set for this summer; BlackBerry delayed them in September after a leaked Android app "caused issues."
- The Android/iOS apps will be able to leverage BlackBerry's existing base of ~60M BBM users, but will also have to compete against rival services with even larger bases, such as WhatsApp, Line, Facebook Messenger, and Skype.
