    Wal-Mart (WMT) and Target (TGT) are among some two dozen retailers working together to develop a mobile payments system to compete with similar products from Google (GOOG) and big cellphone companies. "A number of merchants are surveying the first generation of solutions and have decided they need to and can build a better system," a consultant says.

  • Nothing like 2 low margin retailers spending capital on building a competency that is clearly not in their wheelhouse. They will probably infight so much they will fail anyways. Google can spend more money then all of them combined and not even miss it.

    If there are so many options why don't they just bid them off against each other?

  • Since Google has so much money to spend their solution is likely to be too expensive for the "low-margin" retailer to use. Walmart and Target are more likely to come up with a cheaper and more successful alternative.

    As for this not being a part of their core competency, you should read the article on Target's computers knowing before a father that his daughter is pregnant. Both Target and Walmart have incredibly competent IT departments.

    First what does Google have that is expensive?

    Second I know the IT industry extremely well because neither is a shining example of IT prowess. Even though they might think differently.

    Third these joint ventures mostly fail for lack of agreement and mediocrity.
