I wonder if next months increase in those receiving food stamps will have anything to do with the sold out I-Pads?
Way to funny. A completely broke population just cannot do without the latest re-invention of a product that not to long ago was upgraded.
It is good to be the king in this country because everyone else is going to get exactly what they deserve in the end.
Poverty.
Possibly.
Then again the nation's number one employer is....Wal-Mart. Unless everyone at Wal-Mart is at the managerial level it is safe to say that the majority of people working at Wal-Mart are not exactly rolling in it.
I agree with with you however on disposable income. Any income can be disposable when it is at the expense of the future.
The Economic Policy group reports that 1 in 3 Americans (who are eligible to do so) have nothing saved for retirement. Zero.
Half of all Americans do not even have a bank account with $2000 in it.
We simple live in a dumbed down nation of souls who are in complete and utter denial about their future, getting old, and most who I believe expect their government to take from me and you to finance these people's retirement. That sadly is what is going to happen.
1) The iPad appears to be increasingly displacing the household PC. You can argue it is not as functional, but for many people (I would even say the majority), it covers what they use a computer for.
2) Have you looked at the demographics of the average iPad user?
Despite that, while my retired mother could not afford one, I gave one to her. She uses it more than her desktop computer, because she surfs in from of the TV. She carries to many places and is saving money on newspaper subscriptions, etc. I think many people who don;t have a disposable income still need a computer. The cheap ones they buy don't last so long or get bogged down with spyware, etc. I am sure many of these people at new purchase time think about an iPad.
That's exactly the point. Most household PCs today are used for media consumption. That's something the iPad does wonderfully and at a comparable price point. Household PCs will be relegated to hobbyists and gamers in a few years time - exactly what they were nearly 30 years ago.
Yahoooooooooooo!!!!
But, back to food stamps. Or maybe just to the median family of 4 with $75,000 annual gross income. They will spend money at XMAS. iPads, iPod Touches and iPhones are some of the most wished for items. Many prioritize these over other things.
As an aside. I lived in Shanghai in 2006-9. I was living in the financial district and the locals had to take the subway to work. Roads are a mess with traffic and local apartment too expensive. The vast majority of people you would see are typical upper middle class. Which is a couple of strata lower then here. Annual income may at most be $15-20,000 US. Everyone was carrying a pay as you go mobile. So many had iPods in their ears. A frightening number had Sony PSPs in their hands to game with. At work - EVERYONE had the latest portable game player of fad. This was all before the iPad. They were prioritizing such purchases for personal entertainment. One thing you learn living in Asia with the high population density is that outdoor play is limited. Indoor fun for relaxation dominates. I remember reading an article about a Hong Kong manufacturer of radio control toy cars. He sold so few in Asia because of the small apartment style living.
Actually the median family income of 4 in the USA is between $45K & $49K per year. It has stayed within that range for the past decade, and when adjusted for inflation is actually much lower.
You are right. No one on SA is on food stamps. We all know this is not the TMZ website or a Jerry Springer website. It is a safe bet that people that come to SA have some real net worth and are not in the the bottom 80% of Americans that have and own essentially nothing.
I want to apologize to MarkS above for my usual rantings on what continues to be a massive cultural and social decline of our country. The priorities of this country and what it citizens deem important are so back assed now. I deny no one the right to spend their hard earned money the way they see fit. No one.
However, (and this comment can apply to all who are on SA) just wait until sometime in the near future when after all your life's hard work, your balance between savings and spending, wise investing, perhaps own personal risk taking in order to build an empire for yourself and your family......you are then going to be asked, no wait, FORCED, to turn over what is rightfully yours to support the tens of millions in this country who could care less they lived like pigs, basked in the lowest common denominator, lived so far beyond their means buying things they could not afford in the first place nor really needed.
All those people are going to be crying out and complaining that because you all were smart enough and cared enough to live your lives the right way, that you should take care of them as well because they are entitled to it.
If anyone doubts me I hope you wake up real soon and stop pretending that is not going to happen. Because that is exactly what is going to happen in this country.
iPad 1.0, that is. I will get the new one. What the heck!
