Why we love politics: "I no longer share that view," responds Energy Secretary Steven Chu when asked by a Senator about his 2008 statement saying, "We have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe." Chu today: "Of course we don't want the price of gasoline to go up, we want it to go down."

  • I guess he was for higher gas prices before he was against it. These sound bites do come came around to bite you. Trying to hide their agenda is not going to work anymore.

  • Chu was speaking during the W. Bush recession of 2008-2009 when gas was extremal cheap and millions were unemployed because of it. Over the last 3 years the US ecomony has turned around.

  • Gas was over $4 a gallon in 2008, when this statement was made. When Chu wanted to boost prices to European levels, he was referring to a cost of $7-8 per gallon at the time. Given the policy measures taken by the current administration, they still seem very intent on raising prices to these levels. However, it would be political suicide to proclaim this publicly.

  • The Chu testimony was comical.

Here's a transcript as reported by the AP:

    Senator: Mr. Chu...
Chu: That's Doctor Chu to you.
    Senator: Excuse me, Doctor Chu...
Chu: Why not refer to me as Nobel-Laureate Doctor Chu.
Senator: Is it true Nobel laureate Chu that you do favor few new uses of new fuels.
    Chu: True
Senator: In fact, you do wish to woo new massive transit funding.
Chu: That's true too. I knew we should build more choo choo's.
Senator: Did you say we should have gasoline prices at European levels.
Chu: Are you joking? Who in their right mind, representing a president running for re-election, would say such a thing? In fact I called for more oil production. Here is a tape of me (starts machine) (voice on machine) "this is Nobel laureate Doctor Chu. Today is January 20th, 2008. Drill, baby drill."
Chu: See, I told you so.
Senator: Sorry, I didn't know that...
