Monday, March 19, 2012, 4:50 PM ETDisney (DIS) says it will take a $200M write-down related to the mega-flop John Carter, worse than the $120M-$160M forecast by analysts. The loss will result in Disney's studio division reporting an operating loss of $80M-$120M in the March quarter, compared with a $77M operating profit in the December quarter. Disney hopes The Avengers and Pixar's Brave will give its studio ops a lift later this year.

Remember in this genre, Star Wars is the gold standard, and a director has to do everything in his power to differentiate himself in regard of that. I saw a piece of every major sci-fi film put into this movie as a direct rip off, and without attempt to be original. Give it 2 .5 stars. Wait for dollar theater or DVD.
I am surprised you haven't heard of the book, I thought Burroughs was fairly well known. You should give it a try sometime, I wouldn't call it a literary classic, but very imaginative and entertaining. (Disclosure: I loved Atlas Shrugged.)
Waiting to see what the TV series will bring. Hope its better than the prequels.
Back to John Carter though, the lead actress was amazing though, she upstaged the lead actor, still don't care what his name is, by a long shot. She could do a lot of action movies as she just looked so authentic with her stage combat.
Have you read The Foundation? That was the book that supposedly inspired Gene Roddenberry.
Yeah Lynn Collins was awesome, I didn't like her accent, but she is ridiculously hot.
Foundation series by Asimov?? Yes, I would put it in my top 5 books of all time, probably #1 for Sci-Fi.
I am not even much of a romantic, but that idea that the one you love is on another planet and you cannot reach them just awed me. I have never experienced such a feeling before. Most movies are so formulaic, I can predict almost everything that will happen in them. This was truly unique.
The whole, I just met you but I love you forever! Typical Hollywood slobber fest! :)
