The next PlayStation (SNE) will be called the Orbis and be released ahead of the 2013 holiday season, reports gaming site Kotaku. It's also claimed the console will feature an AMD CPU and GPU (in-line with rumors), and will support 3D video at very high resolutions. However, PS3 games won't be supported, and neither will pre-owned games - the latter is a negative for GME, which has been hoping such restrictions wouldn't exist.

  • There's a lot of competition in the market for new games, especially from online retailers. Whereas GameStop is one of the dominant players in the used game market, thanks to all of the customers who trade in their games at its shops.

  • thank you for the clarification. I believe however that this move (if confirmed) is a risk more for Sony (the success of Intel and Microsoft is "backward compatibility"... but maybe for games it is less critical than for office applications)
And by the way of course after some time there will be also used games for the new PS, I guess :)

  • No problem. I think it would probably be a mistake for Sony if Microsoft doesn't follow suit. It'll anger/alienate a subset of gamers at a time when Sony needs to win their support after losing the current round of the console wars. But if Microsoft puts similar restrictions into the next Xbox, then there's less risk involved.

  • This will kill the industry, and quite frankly and true gamer knows this won't happen. Gamestop has the highest market share for ps3 games and xbox games, the fact is Gamestop helps the industry, if you kill the middle man, the industry goes down with it.
