Thursday, April 5, 2012, 12:53 PM ETIntel (INTC) plans to spend hundreds of millions to promote its ultrabook initiative, a marketing effort the chip giant calls its largest since the release of its Centrino platform in 2003. While many initial ultrabooks will simply be thin-and-light laptops in the MacBook Air mold (and that raises questions of how well they'll compete against the Air), future Windows 8 models are expected to be notebook/tablet hybrids with built-in touchscreens.

I think the Ultrabook will do just fine. I think it is a sad commentary that the dullards at HP and Dell had to have the Ultrabook jammed up their fundamental orifice by Intel. The Macbook Air has been burning their tail feathers for three years. HP and Dell don't deserve to be in business...No imagination.
Intel will spend $300 million to help the design process and to set up supply chains for Ultrabooks and more hundreds if millions to promote the end product. Can anyone out there even imagine a company like ARMH doing this.
I was thinking about making the "Big Switch" to a Macbook Air, but I suspect that I will be an early buyer of an Ultrabook.
The reason for that is that I bought a "full house" iPad for my wife....just over a kilobuck...So I tried it for a couple of days. My conclusion is that it is a mess. I found it to be slow, I found it easy to hit unwanted icons and not be able to get back easily. The damn thing locked up on me twice an it had to be completely powered down in order to recover. It won't run the JAVA based streamer for Scottrade...At least I couldn't get it to run the streamer.
My bride wanted me to get one. I said, "no chance, I'll spend a G on an Ultrabook and have everything I want and need".
Too bad, but I think the iPad will be discovered to be a bad product. Apple could put an x86 in it and make it a non-clamshell Air, otherwise it doesn't make sense to me.
