Having snapped up Instagram, Facebook (FB) needs to turn its sights on acquiring Pinterest, argues Christopher Lochhead. Pinterest is the "hottest user-generated content app since YouTube," and while the value of Facebook activity has a short shelf-life, Pinterest content tends to retain its value longer. One thing's for sure: the Instagram deal makes clear Facebook isn't scared to pay top dollar for a market-leading rival. And top dollar might be necessary here. (previous)

  • I cannot figure out pinterest vs Flickr. I applied got approved on Pinterest but cannot pin anything on iPad. It also initially was like forcing me to follow people.

Good luck with that Facebook. Do you.

  • The only problem with this concept is that now that FB has become a big behemoth users won't jump on the new stuff it buys.

Users will naturally gravitate to the new start ups and avoid FB at all costs. It will not surprise me that Instagram just dies or at the most just becomes integrated into FB with a new picture sharing site becoming the dominate interface for Twitter.

  • Pinterest survives on users submitting content taken from other providers without attribution, royalties, etc. Facebook could not get away with this for a second so they either wont touch them or will severely dilute it.

  • Spotify should be next IMO and they need to do it in a hurry as it's already valued over 1B based on PE investments.

  • I agree very much so, and will be writing an article on this exact subject shortly. I am doing an entire mini-series on Facebook and their future-revenue streams, including potential realms of business they have not yet entered. Feel free to read the last one, and follow me for updates on the next one.
