AMD is one of the companies interested in acquiring MIPS Technologies (MIPS -2.7%), according to BSN, now that the #2 developer of CPU core designs (behind market colossus ARMH) is on the block. Buying MIPS would help AMD reduce its PC dependence, and also fit into its plans to develop chips featuring 3rd-party IP. However, BSN thinks CFO Thomas Seifert, the man said to "effectively run" AMD, could stand in the way.

  • This would not be a good idea for AMD, as it would stretch their balance sheet out a little more than necessary after recent seamicro acquisition, and it would yield very little, since the MIPS technology is a one trick poney, that is becoming obsolete as we speak.

  • AMD bought and sold a MIPS based SOC company a few years back. It might make more sense for Microchip to buy MIPS if the royalty is costing much. It would be more the pattern of AMD to adopt ARM and go after Nvidia's business.

  • Desperate move. Could pay off big if They could get MIPS mobile, but that would be very very difficult.

This is their way of solving the x86 isa power hog problem.
