Tuesday, April 17, 2012, 9:59 AM ETBoeing (BA +0.9%) announces that the first 787 to fly partially-powered by biofuels took off from Everett, Washington on its way to Tokyo. Japan's ANA was the carrier for the notable flight that will emit an estimated 30% less CO2 than a run from a comparable airplane.

The bad news: they'll have to retro-fit the plane to run on fossil fuels as it turns out we need more, not less carbon output to prevent a catastrophic cooling of our planet.
Primer for those not in the know: when a company runs a plane "partially on anything," they're responding to political pressure, in effect saying "my, how marvelous is the Emperor's new robe."
Thus we have electric companies that provide power "partially generated" by windmills, gerbils running in wheels, and chicken poop. Progressivism forever!
That's why BA is making a big mistake not trying to acquire Bombardier and its truly innovative and fuel-saving C-series.
BA's brand-new partnership with ERJ will still place it years behind Bomber and its new presumtive partner, Comac.
(Not to mention the fact that Bombardier is one of top passenger rail companies in the world, an industry hated in the US, but making a literally humongous comeback everywhere else in the world. Boeing has NO stake in that industry and could vault to the top of the pack overnight if it set its sights on Bombardier, rather than ERJ.)
