Let's hope the buy side has done better forecasting than the sell side. Thus far, street estimates have been all over the ballpark, but rarely on target with reported figures. Last quarter the street didn't come within a mile of estimating what Apple would earn (how hard can it be to count widgets, and with a thousand 'analysts' doing it...?). Maybe this time the sell side will only miss by 30%!!! When it's all said and done, how do you evaluate the results other than by comparing actual with previous actual? Some of those, like Microsoft, aren't coming close to what they earned a year ago.

So much for 'earnings' bailing out the market.

Europe won't fail but most of the countries that participate in the currency union will. After that, it's Europe redux. Second verse same as the first. It's simply history rhyming, or whatever; not the end of the world, unless you hold sovereigns too long. You'll still get your parasite checks, they'll just be worth about half of their previous face value. Don't dispair, the top one percent will still be in charge. They always are.

The "earnings" of an index are a well defined thing and have nothing to do with analysts expectations of earnings. They are what they are and they "may" be larger than ever before. We don't know at this point.
