Ryanair (RYAAY +1.8%) CEO Michael O'Leary's newest money-saving ploy: having passengers carry their own bags straight to the plane, which he says would necessitate just one baggage-handler vs. the normal five. Besides cheaper tickets, "what it means is no more waiting at the carousel, no more losing your bags, no more wasting your life in over-priced airport terminals," he says.

  • Ryanair's experiment seems to be reaching for the bottom point of how crap the service can be made until people give up and pay the extra few pounds to fly with a decent airline. However, if half your passengers are too drunk to walk in a straight line and think that spending 2 hours on a bus in the middle of the night to get to the city they are visiting is normal, they might not give up until told they have to travel on the top of the plane.

Good Lord. Can you imagine the TSA lines in the USA if one had to carry the bag from check in, through security and then onto the plane (most likely the cargo hold for checked baggage)? Soon, we'll just jump in the cargo hold with the baggage. Anyone know what the shipping cost per pound is? I'm at 175 lbs so maybe the cargo route is a bargain.
