Independent estimates were more in line, although those who stubbornly stuck with Windows machines to the last were less likely to admit the actual extent of the growth.
Q. Why would you buy an Android instead of the iPhone?
A. It's just as good.
So that's not a reason, that's a rationalization. I press people over and over to understand their reasoning, as I did when they spend hard earned money on a new computer without even looking at a Mac, and eventually they get mad at me and clam up. But there is no reason -- there is only some sort of psychological "set" that makes the premature conclusion that it would be "better" not to buy the Apple product if possible.
Some no doubt bristle, as I do, at a thing that everyone "has to have."
Some have been brought up to be modest, and buying the best and more expensive thing is "uppity" and "spendthrift" if there is an economy model that will do "just as well." Even if it's not actually less expensive. A Chevy is the same car made in the same plant as a Cadillac, my Mom always said. The analogy doesn't completely hold because the Caddy was actually tricked out with more stuff and cost more, but that's the idea.
There is whole new generation that was not raised by people who had to be frugal in a middle stripe of the class layers now. It's different.
Those are a couple of speculations, but in the end, I remain well and truly mystified.
And analysts are no more exempt from ordinary human behaviour than anyone else, so it might seem presumptuous or boastful to anticipate earnings out of line with one's peers. And Lord Forbid you should ever be the high estimate and have Apple fall below that figure, because you would clearly be labelled an Apple Fanboy.
Saving time in one of the fundamental reasons to buy Apple products. As I get older and realize that I have more yesterdays than tomorrows, my time becomes more precious to me, and therefore worth more money. Will I spend a few hundred dollars more to save myself, say, a week over the next several years? You betcha!
Another factor the analysts fail to appreciate is cool. With quality comes status, with status, respect. Owning quality suggests that you can tell the difference between a well-made product and a piece of junk. What teenager will show up with a lameass Zune or Droid phone? "But my dad saved a lot when he got me this!" Fail. The entire population of China understands this concept, but a lot of MBAs don't.
And finally, metrics. They confuse market share with operating systems. Android is a free OS; iPhone is the hardware and iOS. Not the same. That's like trying to compare Google with NORAD.
When we were cleaning up after he passed we found a number of half sticks of gum. Turned out after one of the price increases he cut down to half a stick! He wasn't a hoarder, just frugal.
Long Apple and was buying all week. Yipeeee!
This stock easily goes to $750 by year end. Higher is not out of the question. Once the new iPhone and iTv hit the stores, this stock breaks $1000.
To all the Apple Bears out there, you need to be asking yourself this question in an honest fashion... how can you NOT own this stock?
When people stop camping overnight for the release of the third version of the same product and stop selling their body parts for the company products is when I will consider selling.
Long Apple and bought some each of the last five days. One falling knife I was happy to catch.
Whether Apple will eventually run out of Jobs' ideas or attention to detail, who knows, but it should be good for a couple of years before it becomes a conventional big company.
Do the opposite of the sheep.
Short AAPL is what you are saying.
This stock may be up over $40.00 tomorrow.
Long AAPL
This is what I posted in facebook today before the close:
Apple is reporting its Q2 earnings after the market closes today. Everybody is shorting and selling apple due to the fact that Verizon and ATT&T new subscribers for the Iphone wasn’t quite as high as last month but still not bad in my opinion.
Right now APPLE (aapl) is down $15 and busted through the 50 MA because most believe apple will miss on tonites earnings. What they do not realize is Apple is an international company and what they loss in the USA can easily be compensated for in 22 other countries that Apple also does business in including China which has a 8% GDP for this year.
People around the world will gladly stand in line for hours to get the latest Apple product.s. I think the majority is wrong and that is why I am long on APPLE with June Calls.

Better than watching a cricket match.
a) I'm surprised we didn't see a better rally at end of day, as the smart shorts got out.
b) Jobs didn't have a monopoly on being smart and innovative; can we let him go please ?
How hard is it to count windgets, and multiply by the price? You would think someone would have figured it out by now.
The again, maybe not. Apparently.
Run Forest. Run
surely given these results they should be guiding 10% higher? is it because there wont be the chinese red envelope effect to help numbers beat by as much?
i'm very impressed that Apple have sold one IPAD for every 3 Iphones, just looking around here in theh UK there must be at least 10 Iphones for every Ipad you see
When you looking into the future and see the product stream that will occur in the 2nd half of the year as well as the release partnerships in emerging markets, you'll know what to do.
Math never lies.
This market is f*kd.
But yeah, really surprised there wasn't more upside at the end of the day going into earnings. Guess people still can't pull the buy trigger when they keep hearing all the bad news.
guys on cnbc and the sky is falling about apple .let see how they put the spin on this after a week and half of doom!!!!!
