I've always thought this is bullshit. When my company does business in a different state, I can't fail to withhold tax and tell consumers to pay 'use tax'. I still don't understand how internet companies can get away with it. I wouldn't have a problem if it made any sense, but it's totally arbitrary.

The reason that internet companies should not collect taxes for states they are not residing in is that it adds cost to the cost of the product for everyone. If there is to be a national tax, then it should be a national tax imposed by the federal government, not all states imposing a national tax each with different rules and rates.

The added cost for an internet company to collect state sales tax is insignificant. If it even exists! It is a simple matter to let their computer identify the residence and add appropriate tax.

Residents are supposed to declare, and pay, a use tax. But how many people are naive enough to believe that happens on a large scale. Allowing internet companies to avoid collecting sales tax puts local businesses at a price disadvantage.
