    Aggregate dividend payouts among S&P 500 companies are on pace to hit a record $279B this year, according to S&P's Howard Silverblatt, but the trend could soon reverse if dividend taxes soar next year, a possibility under current legislative proposals. In that case, companies may seek to return value to shareholders through buybacks instead.
