"The Avengers," Disney's (DIS) multi-superhero flick, generated $80.5M in its domestic opening on Friday and $30.3M internationally, bringing the total global take so far to $414.8M. That easily surpasses the estimated $220M budget and helps make up for the debacle that was "John Carter."

  • This will make up for John Carter, but of course, if they had never made John Carter to begin with, there would not be anything to make up for!

Instead this movie will mostly off set the loss on JC, but will return them a nice profit in the end...just not nearly as much as it should have...awesome movie! Must see.

  • Thanks - wondered how good it was. Wife dragged me to the "Hunger Games". Now it's my turn.

  • Will this provide a move up prior to earnings ?

  • It could because people may have forgotten the JC debacle and jubliate over Avengers. But you cannot deny that the JC 200+ million loss isn't going to help.

  • That brings me to a decision about going long for just this month or buying more time with say a July call. I feel like the earnings call on Tuesday will move DIS higher with the recent Avenger week-end profit.

  • I am not saying eventually it will make its money back, BUT, it was a big write off. Please post a link that shows it has broken even or making a profit. Thanks, just interested thats all.

  • John Carter has grossed $271,191,000- according to Wikipedia. This was all that I could find. The number is as of May 6th.

It seems Disney is moving on from this, just as they did with Mars Needs Moms, or whatever that one was called.

Movie numbers are a small part of the Disney conglomerate.

    Have a great evening.

  • Yes I understand that, however you cannot ignore 200 million dollars. Sounds like the movie didn't break even or is barely breaking even. The film cost 250 mil + to make, but then there is marketing, the film arrive a year late, ect...
