The problem was that the socialists, like all people, couldn't agree on what to have for lunch much less how many steel plants to build, what color should the public schools be painted and so on. The non-democratic Euro takeover was anticipated by Hayek and yet the Euro elites still stumble down that path even thought they've had more than a half century of experience than Hayek did.
Hayek's primary reason for why socialism doesn't work and should be avoided at all costs: it fuels the ambition of the most loathsome and ruthless men (sorry ladies, it's almost all men) who will their way to power regardless of the outcome of their 5-year plans. Thus the need for constant re-education and propaganda to remind everyone of how well the plan is working.
One is reminded in our own country of Obama and Ayers and Alinsky and Axelrod and Emanuel and...
