First no Facebook, now no Super Bowl, as General Motors (GM -1.6%) decides advertising in next year's Super Bowl would prove too costly. GM is in the process of evaluating all its media properties in an effort to maximize the efficiency of its ad budget, but the automaker says it isn't cutting back; GM spent $4.47B on advertising last year.

  • The problem isn't the advertising, but the cars.

  • what gm vehicles are you familiar with? overall volume and pricing power are up on a historical basis...gm currently has the best lineup that they've had in decades. of course no one ever tends to focus on the quality issues that japanese automakers have experienced over the past several years, they can do no wrong

  • [GM to rely on word of mouth?]

GM is selling more cars per month in China than the USA. That's their future and where they'll spend their ad dollars.

Full disclosure: I wouldn't own a GM car if it was given to me. Let the unionists carry the company.

  • Last time I was in China (nearly a decade) I noticed something funny about American brands there... they were better in China. From Levi's jeans down to even McDonald's. Of course they were priced like premium luxuries, even for an American, so it makes sense why they were a notch up. But definitely the companies were saving their best stuff for the growth markets.

  • Similar to how Mercedes is a standard car in many parts of the world, but in America they are top of the line.

  • Sort of like how Ikea in Sweden is the low-rent brand, and here it has some cachet for young people.

  • Every time I see a Government Motors ad I think handouts, bailouts, crony capitalism, failed volt, corruption.

Cars designed by a committee of union leaders and government bureaucrats...I'll pass!!!!
