The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has chosen Apple's (AAPL) "nano" sim card design as the new standard for the next generation of such cards over a rival proposal from Nokia (NOK), RIM (RIMM) and Motorola (GOOG). The new sim is 40% smaller than the micro-Sim used in some devices today.

  • Well, that'll make the phones lighter then! The full size SIMs are already about at the limit of smallness that my fingers can manage without dropping, so I don't see the point, but doubtless there is one.

  • It's the Subscriber Identity Module which is a chip that contains the carriers data so the device can connect to a carriers networks. Some phones allow for more than one SIM.
