34% of respondents to a U.S. Reuters survey say they're spending less time on Facebook (FB -2.1%) than they did 6 months ago, whereas only 20% say they're spending more time (ed: perhaps Facebook's incredible usage rate left little room for upside). In addition, 80% say they've never bought a product or service as a result of a Facebook ad, a figure that drives home recent monetization worries. The L.A. Times recently discussed declining Facebook use among some U.S. teens.

  • It is an interesting situation. While wildly successful, how long do these kind of social network sites last before they simply go out of vogue? Remember how big MySpace was? Know anyone who uses it anymore? I sure don't. Nexopia? I remember it was the example the police/counselling groups used to refer to as a warning to parents to watch what sites their kids put personal info on. My kids don't even know what Nexopia is these days. Classmates.com? Barely a memory. So what happens to Facebook when the next best social network site comes along? It's always impressive how fast a new one becomes the hot new site and everyone dumps the old one. Can you imagine?......
