American Greetings (AM +0.3%) buys bankrupt U.K. retailer Clinton Cards for $37M in a deal that involves 397 outlets that generate $315M in annual revenues, and which saves 4,500 jobs. American Greetings was Clinton's largest supplier and one of its lenders; the British firm entered administration when it couldn't repay a £35M ($54.1M) loan to American Greetings.

  • This does not surprise me. In the 1980s and 1990s AM used mafia style tactics in most of their business dealings. In subsequent exposure to the new york and new jersey mafia, I found the mafia to be more honorable or fair handed.

I neither joke nor exaggerate. This was my empirical experience. Sorry if I offend anyone in discussing the mafia. Not sorry to anyone regarding AM.
