A day after Apple made waves by unveiling a proprietary iOS mapping platform, WPcentral reports Nokia (NOK) will replace Microsoft's (MSFT) Bing Maps on Windows Phone 8 devices with its own 3D mapping and navigation solution. The site adds WP8 will be "a massive overhaul" that includes Skype integration, an NFC-based mobile wallet, and new developer tools. Verizon (VZ) appears to be planning to throw its weight behind WP8 this fall.

  • Not strange if you look at Nokia Drive, Maps and Transport functionality vs. Bing Maps.

  • Nokia now offers Nokia Drive, Maps and Transport as apps from the Nokia Collection in the Windows Phone Marketplace. If Microsoft replaces Bing Maps with Nokia apps in WP8 then who thinks Microsoft isn't ready to support Nokia to the limit financially? Microsoft will presumably also offer those apps in the Windows 8 Marketplace for notebooks and tablets. Skype integration with People and Phone Hubs would be huge. Nokia City Lens app is currently in beta test on Lumia 900 that provides for using camera to find spots of local interest in cities. We'll know for sure next week on June 20.

  • I think MSFT should pay NOK if they want to use Nokia Drive as a part of the OS, that's a huge cost saving for MSFT and more cash coming in for NOK, a win-win situation but I don't know why they just have not done that.

  • The $1B a year, $250m quarter, in transition fees going from MSFT to NOK is just the beginning of what's possible. MSFT wnats this win really bad and that means NOK has a real partner for 3-5 years.

  • So much good news, so much bad news. The Nokia situation is really disturbing, and I keep thinking that down the road it will improve. The stock doesn't yet agree with that, it doesn't react to the Microsoft connection.
