Some stats from a Mashable infographic about photography: 44% of all U.S. photos are now taken with cell phones; over 4x as many photos were taken in 2011 (380B) as in 2000 (86B); and the 140B photos stored by Facebook (FB) easily dwarf the number stored by Photobucket (10B), Picasa (7B), and Flickr (YHOO - 6B), as well as Instagram's 400M. That kind of dominance is a big reason why the FTC is concerned about Facebook's purchase of Instagram.

  • Let $FB have it. Users will just migrate to a new service. It isn't as if Instagram has the market cornered.

  • Comparing apples and oranges. The total quantity of photos says nothing except that there are a lot more devices out there that take snapshots. They are also different "markets" - photobucket and flickr especially tend to be more avid photo bug and pro than FB photos.
