Microsoft (MSFT) will unveil plans to make its own Windows 8 tablets at a much-speculated L.A. event on Monday, sources tell The Wrap and AllThingsD. It's claimed Microsoft, like Google, has decided it needs its own no-compromise hardware to compete with Apple (AAPL), and that it could sell both ARM-based (ARMH) and Intel/AMD tablets. The move could rankle some PC OEMs, especially given reports Microsoft will charge huge license fees for Windows 8 tablets.

  • Any thoughts on the possibility of Nokia making them?

  • Well when MSFT consumes Nokia at the end of the year I guess you could say they are making them...

  • More unoriginal garbage from the ultimate in tech copycats. What happened to the Zune? And why didn't the strange iPhone funeral come true? And why did Ballmer laugh at the iPhone in 2007?

Because! Microsoft has no vision. They have no taste. They couldn't design themselves out of a wet paper bag. Every Windows 8 tablet will go the way of the Zune.

  • You must have missed the fact that windowsmobile7 and the Metro UI are both developments that came out of the Zune.

  • Have you ever used a Zune or Windows 7.5 phone? The Zune was twice the player the iwhatever was and the Nokia 900 blows the iPhone away. Windows 8 will certainly separate Windows phones from the pack. It did take a while for my adult kids to open up and try anything besides what the tech industry, Apple marketing had pounded into their heads but all 3 agree their next phone will be a Windows 8 phone.

You are correct in Microsoft being slow to market in the phone and tablet sector but with XBOX, OS, cloud computing, office, SQL2012, Lync, Exchange and others they lead the industry thinking. Microsoft is largely undervalued as a long term investment. A change in Sr management would be a plus especially if Stenofski were to replace Ballmer. If Microsoft would rid itself of Kevin Turner and his failed Wal-Mart cancerous mentality that would be a huge plus.

  • The consumer market decided that they prefered the iPod to the Zune. Does anything else really matter? The iPhone and iPad DOMINATE smartphone and tablet profits. You'll have an argument if that ever changes.

  • It's entertaining how Google and MSFT announce to all the OEMs, "Hey, come on board, use our OS!", with the subsequent follow-up, "ohhhh...btw, we will be making our own device and competing directly with you...oh sorry, did I forget to mention?..."

  • I crave to town a tablet that is run by a familiar OS -- Windows --
not the odd Android one from planet Google!

If MSFT can makes ir right, not like Zune, but like xBox

    Why not?

  • This tablet will very likely displace the iPad as the leading tablet. Everyone has been waiting for a tablet that has the same capabilities as their PC. This is it. It will be the #1 tablet within a year.

  • Apple = bad
    Everything else = good

Quite a simple formula, isn't it?

  • One thing is for that, and that is the new Microsoft tablet will most definitely take iPad sales away from Apple. So why are you dislike Apple so much?

  • I have a Playbook, and I think it is great. But if a tablet running Windows existed, I would have seriously considered buying it. I love my Playbook, but will consider also buying a Surface, as it will be much more powerful and flexible than the iPad.
