Friday, June 15, 2012, 11:33 AM ETGallup polling data shows Americans get progressively more pessimistic the further away from home they get, as 49% rate economic conditions in their local area as excellent or good, but 25% positively rate the U.S. economy and 13% the world as a whole. The data suggests Americans may not be in such dire straits as might be assumed based on national confidence ratings.

It's worth remembering that half the nation is either on the dole or have jobs administering the dole--these are flush times for them and perhaps, if another 10 or 20% could make it to the welfare rolls with another 25% in "newly created" paper-shuffling-ready jobs, a solid majority would agree that these are the best of times, not the worst of times.
