Greeks are voting for the second time in six weeks in elections that could lead to the country leaving the euro and the bloc breaking up. As far as the EU elites and investors are concerned, New Democracy and Pasok good, Syriza bad, with the outcome to close to call. A wildfire raging near Athens seems to provide an unfortunate but apposite backdrop, but at least the Greek soccer team progressed to next round of the European Championships.

  • "The Greek soccer team win sets the stage for a match next week that will be dripping in political symbolism. Greece appears likely to face off against Germany in the tournament's quarter-final round. In the epic drama that is the euro-zone crisis, Greece for the past three years has played the role of nettlesome child. Germany has been the unforgiving parent.

(Greece came in second place in its group, and it's slated to square off against the top squad in the tournament's Group B. Germany currently leads that group, but the final rankings won't be known until Sunday night, after Germany plays Denmark in Ukraine.)

In a tournament that's rich in past and present geopolitical rivalries, the Greece vs. Germany showdown would likely top the list".

  • Euro to fall off a cliff tomorrow as Greek elections produce no majority winner and they have billions due at the end of the month!

  • Rather than wait for them to fall of a cliff perhaps it is best to push them off and get it over with. If the election does not provide constructive results with a commitment to pay their bills then enough should be enough. They should never have been let into the Euro in the first place.

  • Agree with sr1977, the soccer game was a few hour of relief for most Greeks. The election is meaningless. Polls clearly show that whomever wins the country won't foam a Government and even if they did both parties are dependent on a new agreement and Germany has shut the door already ! Clearly closed it and Greece can't pay their loans on this planet or any other planet.

What is going on now is that charities are struggling to feed more than 300,000 people a day an it's growing ! Hope for these people is gone and employment is not on the horizon !

Greece must print the drachma and where is the Diaspora ! The world is full of Greeks with the ability to help and there not stepping up ! This is where people all over must act as Governments are not charities and bills are bills and must be paid or the bankruptcy process must be activated. That is where Greece is. Their bankrupt and must leave the Euro and rebuild.

3000 years of history and 1500 of then=m Greece has been in default... This is the birth of democracy and it will be the place where it's proved it doesn't work > US founders knew this and formed a republic, but, politicos for self preservation have chipped away at it and it has morphed back into a democracy ! Greece will be the prototype for the US's future !

Glad i'm real old and will watch from above ! DL

  • The Greek vote has no lasting significance, the country is sick and will soon enter chaos. Much of Europe, and the US are just a few steps behind Greece. The western welfare model is broken and must fail. When the “social beneficiaries" outnumber the worker bees the system sickens and then dies. We are at the sickness stage where beneficiaries make a rational choice to choose welfare over work. Welfare now pays better considering minimal skill levels of the beneficiary class. The US is very likely at FULL EMPLOYMENT, so Greece is coming to a neighborhood near you.
