Chesapeake (CHK +5.6%) says it will cut 8% of its workforce at its prolific Barnett shale field in Texas as drilling slows, and will entertain offers on its Fort Worth office tower that it bought for $100M in 2008. CHK has pledged to sell up to $11.5B in assets this year to fill a projected $4B-$5B shortfall.

  • Anybody want to bet that CHK's "prolific" Barnett shale field has reached payout ?

  • The fire sale of CHK assets appears to have begun in earnest. Looks like everything is for sale. When does the CHK airline go up for sale?

BTW, for those who think Icahn is a god, did you get caught holding the bag at WCI Communities? Are you holding the bag at Navistar?

Just remember, Icahn is for Icahn, and he could care less about those attempting to ride his coattail.

"Just remember, Icahn is for Icahn, and he could care less about those attempting to ride his coattail. "

And just what is wrong with that? Did he ever say otherwise?

  • No, there is nothing wrong with that. Some may not be aware that while Icahn is buying some stock (and making sure it is well known), he is usually quietly buying the debt (at a substantial discount). If the common goes to zero, he makes up for any losses on the common with the bonds which have first call on the assets.

  • 70 out of 700 community-relation types?? Hardly a bold move with only one or two rigs currently drilling the Barnett acreage. Typical image over substance from McClendon which may explain why CHK will never make a real profit from their Barnett operations even after $Bs have been invested and thousands of wells have been drilled. Their Barnett much like the rest of CHK has been a ponzi scheme.

  • Are landsmen considered community-relation types in the CHK scheme of things?

  • Majority of landmen for the Barnett are in OKC - most of FW is community relations, public relations, surface access, pipeline right of way and land administration related to drilling pads.
