Tesla Motors (TSLA) trades a bit lower, 0.5% premarket, as concerns over production problems for the automaker are raised by Capstone. The firm sees a short-term rise in shares as euphoria takes hold over the highly-publicized EV launch, but warns that as glitches and problems crop up investors will want to have exited their long positions.

  • I think Tesla will do fine! - but I don't exactly trust Goldman either - remember they were shorting the AAA stocks they were selling to their clients right before the BIG crash - however, I have been to the Tesla plant, have been in the beta models, have been to the road shows - if Tesla is bad, they are really good at it - my order stands for my Model S, and I am looking to add to my TSLA position -

  • What exactly are the "production problems" that Capstone (whoever they are) foresee? Is their assessment based on hard data or pure speculation?

Tesla has met virtually every production date and every promise associated with the Model S. They have a state of the art factory, they're projecting 25% margins. They're on track to sell 5,000 cars this year and 20,000 next year (achieving profitability in 2013). They already have close to 12,000 pre-orders at $5,000 deposit each, and that's before the cars have hit the road and before any advertising. Why on earth "exit" the stock?

  • Exactly - I did a Google search on Capstone and can't find any information on them at all as analyst, so who they are and why they gave the recommendation they gave are suspect - If anyone knows who or what they are please post - not that it should make a difference in a rational decision as described above - but wouldn't it be interesting if we find out they are an oil or ICE company subsidiary -
