The numbers drive home why iOS maintains a commanding lead in developer support, in spite of Android's market share edge. Also: 18% of iOS downloads now come from China, where Google Play has a limited presence.

U.S. centric paid downloads are largely driven by gaming. I suppose that is great for some of the game developers, but not so good for other app developers.
A look at the country break-out figures, though limited here, implies that the U.S. smartphone market is much more concerned about apps than other parts of the world. Most smartphones now ship with a wide array of apps already installed, so the need to add more for other functions is not seen in the numbers. Obviously people do download apps that are not games, but the numbers do not suggest much hope for non-game app developers.
