Coca-Cola (KO -0.4%) and PepsiCo (PEP -0.1%) start to use the same tactics that Big Tobacco has employed for years of championing the right of consumers to pick their own products. While the campaign of Mayor Bloomberg in New York City to ban large-sized soda drinks appears to be only a minor irritant, increasing talk of restricting soda products from the food stamp program stands as a more legitimate threat to soda sales if it takes hold.

  • First Sodas, then burgers, then Mashed Potatoes then what? Thomas Jefferson
would be rolling over in his grave. Big Brother needs to leave us alone.
I can see taking Sodas off the food stamp program, but if they do that
then the whole program should be reexamined. Nothing is more irritating than to see a food stamp recipient buying anything more than
the basics. That same person is going to get their groceries and then their health care paid for by me. Don't let them eat cake.

  • Easy solution... Don't take Big Brother's food stamps ;)

Does anyone see the irony of someone complaining that food stamps are becoming too restrictive and "big government" LOL?

$80 billion spent per year, much of it traded at 50 cents on the dollar for drugs, beer and smokes. Often laundered through immigrant-owned convenience stores with no computerized record-keeping. And that doesn't even include the chips and candy sales. Can't imagine why the Feds don't want us to see a breakdown of items sold and spent by-location.

  • I volunteered at a facility that helped the needy. Overall, those in need were the only ones served. However, there was a percentage of people who were regulars and thought it was their right. Food stamps need to be monitored (on an overall basis) to prevent fraud. I wonder if there is any oversight on this program at all. I know of people using stamps while owning big new cars and very wide screen TVs.

I'm old and remember the 6 oz Coke in a glass bottle. Six oz to 16 oz and they wonder why America is morbidly obese.
