"What Apple (AAPL) has shown is that consumers want systems in which every detail has been carefully thought through," says tech consultant Hal Berenson. And that's why he thinks Microsoft Surface makes perfect sense. The mediocre hardware and unnecessary software provided by PC OEMs have consistently led to sub-standard experiences. To compete against the iPad, Microsoft had no choice but to develop an end-to-end solution. Farhad Manjoo makes a similar point. (also)

  • The dominance of Windows shows that the computer market is still more price sensitive than function sensitive. I like my MacBook Pro, but I don't see much point in most people spending this much just to do e-mail and surf the internet.

The point of the article is that hardware vendors could do more work to make the end user experience better. The downside is that more time means more expense, and that impacts already thin hardware margins. If many Windows laptops sell without someone actually trying them out, based mostly on price, then it is tough to convince hardware makers they must do more.

  • The dominance of Windows/MicroSoft illustrates that people are cheap, in general. You can go out and buy a cheap set of tires and they will meet every requirement of being a tire, as Windows does with the computer. But, if you want performance, longevity and responsiveness, you spend the money. Windows could come up with the most intuitive, powerful, whiz-bang piece of crap in the world and that's all you would have. You will spend extra money on repairs, anti-virus software, recovering lost files, and eventually replacing the whole system, in the end. Just buy the original...buy a Mac. It is an investment.
