For whom Apple and Samsung toll: Horace Deidu provides charts (I, II, III, IV) detailing the recent progression of Nokia (NOK), Research In Motion (RIMM), Sony Ericsson (SNE), and HTC's respective shares of mobile phone industry shipments, revenues, and profits. It's not a pretty sight.

  • 35c is too risky for the real situation I see here ( does Kodak was 1st in such a blue ocean wave ..?)....

  • If you look at the chart provided, it shows that Nokia's total share of mobile phones sales has decreased by less than half in the past five years. Yet the stock price of Nokia has dropped by ~90%! I don't find Nokia management in any sort of panic given the 60%+ drop in share prices over the last 3 months and this leads me to believe that all of this is part of a well devised plan.

  • Basically Apple is taking all the money, while Samsung is eating the market share. All the rest suffer, nothing to do about Windows Phone vs Android vs iOS.

Nokia decision to support Windows Phone probably the most logical move but Microsoft/Nokia fail on marketing.

  • I can see why HTC is moving towards Windows Phone 8 as Android profits are fleeting. These charts make me wonder why Sony continues to make smartphones; they just released a new one recently.

I like that one of my comments yesterday paraphrasing a famous novel "For Whom The Bell Tolls" has been used for this news post. Ring that bell. Ha hah!

  • @Herr Hansa Actually, taken from the poem by John Donne, Meditation XVII:
"never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. . . ."

  • It was the first Hemingway novel I ever read, and for some reason I was reminded of it when I made the comment on a different message thread a day earlier. Interesting to see it as a poem, which makes me wonder if that was what prompted the novel by Hemingway.

  • I had bought RIMM years ago. At the time I was using a Blackberry and had been for years and loved it. I really thought it had captured the corporate/government market and that iPhone would capture the under 30 market. I got an iPhone as a gift 3 years ago and instantly realized the error in my thinking. I took a beating on RIMM - and frankly, I cannot imagine what any of these companies could come out with now that could seriously compete with the iPhone. Clearly, I may lack imagination.

  • Radical,
Your instincts were correct...just think if you followed them, dumped RIMM and went long AAPL...don't do the calculations or it may make you want to cry...

With Lumia, the phone may be a lot better than the company or the stock...

  • radicalmoney: You are right, you do lack imagination. Try a Lumia, you'll see what users on Amazon are raving about.
