More on Microsoft: Relying on interviews and e-mails, Vanity Fair takes an in-depth look at the culture that led Microsoft (MSFT) to become an also-ran in mobile devices and Internet services. Much of the blame is directed towards a ranking system that led to in-fighting, and the failure of the company, obsessed with propping up Windows and Office, to see the disruptive impact of concepts such as touchscreens and news feeds. • MSFT needs a new management team ASAP in my opinion other wise it'll continue to be boring... Not that I mind boring but I would like to see the stock break above $40 someday...

  • The risk isn't "boring". There are boring companies that are very profitable, both of the folks who work at them and for their investors (Accenture and ADP come to mind).

Microsoft is in more danger than is commonly perceived . . . while they start much stronger than RIM, the sequence of events look quite similar. The cash rich company, the "unassailable" position in business, the management team from the '90s, the inability to ship on time while "more agile" competitors (that's how none other than Ray Ozzie described them) lap them.

Very robust companies can survive a lot of mistakes, but sooner or later they have to start getting something right.

  • If Ballmer would retire and be replaced by Steven Stenofski it would be a big step in a positive direction. Ballmer would be well served to take the morale busting Kevin Turner and Lori Brownell with him. Microsoft needs to find a way to be the fun place to work again so top talent would WANT to work there. The products are solid but management is failing.

  • RIMM anyone?

I guess when you're the 800 pound gorilla, you just don't think it's possible that anyone can overwhelm you...
