The margins on the smaller iPad are not as highly relevant to Apple's earnings as compared to the additional earnings from the segment of population joining the Apple "ecosystem" with each new iPad of any size which goes to a NEW Apple Device Devotee.

Does anyone else think that these will replace the current 3.5" iPod Touch? iPhones have been cannibalizing the iPods for several years now. It makes sense to enter the 7" market and phasing out the current 3.5" form factor. There is obviously a HUGE potential for an iPod with a bigger screen and it could effectively kill the handheld game system market to boot.

It will also have what everyone always wanted in an iPod Touch: cellular service. The cheapest one starts at $199 right now. Apple can probably charge $250-300 and people will buy them especially if they also add a microphone for Facetime and Skype.

The mini iPad addresses an entirely different market, so there should be minimal cannibalization. Women especially have opted for the smaller device. Competitively speaking, it is another master stroke by Apple and it shows that common sense, management's ability to reason correctly, supersedes blind obedience to a notion by Steve that he himself would have likely changed by now. I can see Apple's share of the overall tablet market holding at the dominating level it does at present, certainly capturing at least 50% of the market going forward. Despite the lower margins for this product category, we should all be thankful that we are riding this new trend of the popular tablets which is slowly but surely displacing the PC. It is another major historical watershed and we are in the eye of the story loving every moment of it. Volume is our friend here, and with enough sales the profits will follow.

social networking has changed the landscape it seems.......it is a portable mobile travel device......I wouldnt carry one on my person.....but may throw one in the glove compartment,,,,,for around $300 or so pretty affordable....not sure if SJ would change his mind on the subject......but I would place 60/40 bet he would....
